Jasmin Vargas, NMSU

My name is Jasmin Vargas. I've lived my entire life in a small town in New Mexico simply known as Chaparral. I've always had an appreciation for art as a whole, and specifically the way creators can communicate a message to their audience in a visual way. I find myself using my own art as a way to express feelings or ideas I've kept bottled in. Drawing was what first introduced me to the world of art. As a child, I spent countless hours drawing various pictures almost on any surface that I could find! It became something I continued to practice even as the years went by. Now, as a student attending NMSU, I'm hoping to explore and refine these skills to an even deeper level.

It is truly an honor that I was even considered for this scholarship. It will greatly help me as I continue my journey at NMSU.

During the past four years, I spent my time attending Alta Vista Early College. It wasn't easy, but in the end I managed to walk the stage with a high school diploma and an associate's degree in arts because of it. Although I didn't have the typical high school experience others my age had, I got a head start over everyone else and that made it all worthwhile. It makes it much more of an honor considering I'm the first generation in my family to receive a degree and attend university.

Ever since I was a child, I knew that receiving an education and finding the proper career was a very important step in one's life. Now that I'm so close to that part of my journey, it gets a bit nerve-wracking, especially when I myself am still unsure of what I want to do with my life career-wise. What I am sure of, though, is that I will continue my education towards a bachelor or master's degree in order to get my future career on track and that I will also minor in a foreign language.

I am truly grateful for this opportunity you have given me. Thank you for your wonderful support.
