Artist Statement

Art is my form of expression. In one form or another – creativity has always been a part of my life. At first, I used browns and more muted colors. Now I don’t use just one tone of color but layer various shades of a color – one on top of the other. Right now, fascinated even more by color, the brighter I can make a painting, the better; using the opposite hue on the color wheel to color the shadows. My paintings are no longer totally abstract; I think of them as expressive paintings.

I work in various media – pencil, colored pencil, pen & ink, watercolor, soapstone and acrylic. The mood determines what I will be working on; very often I go back to what most people call crafting. I make 3-D pictures from paper/wood. It transports me into my own world of peace and calm and I just create.

Artist Bio

Ilona L. Halderman
Born: Altheim, Germany
I now live in Albuquerque, NM

I first took an interest in crafts around the age of three. At age 10 we moved to the US and I started drawing cartoons. Although I didn’t speak English at first, I still checked out books from the school library, but would copy the drawings instead of reading the book. I am mostly self-taught, but did take art classes at Brooklyn College, NY and at the Staedel Museum in Frankfurt, Germany.

Since moving to Albuquerque, I have had the opportunity to exhibit at the following galleries: NM Art League and Ghostwolf Gallery. I have upcoming exhibits with NM Art League; Tortuga Gallery; Albuquerque Home & Garden Show; Albuquerque Sunport.

I have won 1st and 2nd prizes for carved gourds. A grand prize in sculpture provided an opportunity to exhibit in Paris, France at the Chateau de Vincennes.
