Specialty: Mixed Media
Making art is my way of creating visual artifacts. I like to explore the subtle relationships between what we see and what we imagine. The little bit that are floating in my paintings, drawings, or collages hint at stories - leftover content of something that has happened. They suggest a narrative, a reference, the elapse of time, and a history of occurrences or events.
I typically work on several pieces at a time and treat each one as a puzzle where I add the next part that fits. Beyond the visual experience of creating each piece evolves, there is a physical side of brushing paint, dribbling ink, tearing up interesting images I have found, or scrubbing the surface of a piece with paper towels or rages when I want a more ephemeral effect. It is a multi-faceted and intriguing process that never disappoints me.
On a whim, I moved to New Mexico from Minnesota back in the 80’s and fell in love with the desert - its space and mystery are still a big source of inspiration for me. My background is: an MA in studio art from the University of Minnesota and years working as graphic designer/new media specialist for a Fortune 500 company. I have taught art at the University of Minnesota, but much prefer making art than teaching it.
Living in New Mexico means that I get to rub elbows with lots of great artists, expanding my opportunities for interesting dialogue and new learning!
